Aftereffect: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Painting brings together a select group of artists whose work resonates with that of Georgia O'Keeffe. From her formal innovations, to her ambition to transcribe her ideas and emotions, to her distinctive approach to abstraction and the landscape of New Mexico, O'Keeffe's legacy is identifiable in the work of several generations of painters. These artists share her interest in capturing what Jerry Saltz refers to as the "objective and subjective all at once." That is, in their art, the physical world is neither subjected to, nor victorious over the imagination of the artist, but rather, the two are continuously at play.
The painters gathered here explore a set of formal qualities pioneered by O’Keeffe and modernists of her circle. This is not an exhibition that pays homage to O’Keeffe’s “Santa Fe style” or brings together her paintings with those of other artists based on mere iconographic affinities. Rather, it investigates the ways O’Keeffe’s distinctive formal innovations of scale, space, use of color, and framing, among other compositional devices, remain relevant to painters working today. This exhibition is designed to be an artist-driven experience for visitors that seriously assesses—from a very unique angle—contemporary painting and delivers a fresh view of O’Keeffe’s contribution to the history of landscape painting and abstraction.
Inspired by the 2009 exhibition Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstraction, the Whitney Museum of American Art's long-overdue exploration of the artist's place in the history of modernist abstraction, Aftereffectinitiates an equally overdue assessment of O'Keeffe's lasting influence in the art world today. The artists in the exhibition have found in O'Keeffe's work what the Whitney Museum's exhibition demonstrated: a tradition of modernist painting distinct from Jackson Pollock and the Abstract Expressionists. Aftereffect: Georgia O'Keeffe and Contemporary Painting offers both a reassessment of O'Keeffe's contribution to the history of American painting and introduces fresh ideas about the state of painting today.
In addition to 8 works by Georgia O’Keeffe, the exhibition will feature recent work by Jeffrey Gibson, Mary Heilmann, Emily Joyce, Matt Connors, Carrie Moyer, Mary Weatherford, Lesley Vance, Corey Drieth, Loie Hollowell, Gretchen Marie Schaefer, Leslie Smith III, and Melissa Thorne.
The exhibition is curated by
Elissa Auther, Windgate Research Curator, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, in consultation with Emily Joyce On view from Thursday, February 14 to Sunday, May 26 |

Maus Contemporary is excited to announce the exhibition Leslie Smith III Locus of Control, the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. Locus of Control investigates the degree to which people believe they have control over the outcome of events in their lives, as opposed to exterior forces outside their control. Formally, this project explores unique and individual viewing experiences that challenge how we understand ourselves in relationship to those around us. Referencing the history of Black abstraction the subjects of these inquiries reflect intentions to politicize abstraction in the interest of suggesting perception as a defining factor in our cultural affair with otherness. Smith has produced a series of works where shaped oil paintings redefine the space of the wall with conflicting tangential parings. The pursuit being, to generate works that exhibits the social agency of abstraction while simultaneously contributing to the contemporary discourse within the broader
art world. As a series of paintings, Locus of Control exhibits distinct spaces not dependent upon traditional three-dimensional perspectives. Smith has begun to fracture singular shaped canvases into multiple shapes that relate to each other tangentially. Connected to each other at points, they shift, lean and pull away from each other, at times creating voids and linear creases, forged when two adjacent panels are bolted together. The viewing experience abets the prospect of uncoupling previous histories from identifying unfamiliar forms. Opening Reception: March 17th 6-8pm

Trestle Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition, Echo Spectrum. This group show, co- curated by artists Mel Prest and Kirk Stoller, focuses on nine artists who share a common visual dialect through various media. Each artist explores fragile geometric structures that simultaneously seem to build-up and fall apart. This aesthetic is revealed through painting, sculpture, and mixed media works that appear to share a sympathetic vision and artistic search, even though they have been made in distant geographic locations by artists who are working independently of one another. A primary focus of these resonating artistic practices is the unexpected ways that the picture plane is addressed, and how compositional structures defy pictorial conventions. In three-dimensional form, the sculptures in this exhibition embody the process of their assembly, thereby showing both the qualities of expansion, and deconstruction.
That this gathering of contemporary artworks, presented in Echo Spectrum, could be organized into such a cohesive whole exempli es artists’ ability to authentically connect in a digital age. Each of the nine featured artists: Sarah Bednarek, Nelleke Beltjens, Vivien Collens, Hanz Hancock, Lauri Hopkins, Anna Kunz, Patrick Morrissey, Andy Parkinson, and Leslie Smith III, are currently working in locations as disparate as Ghent, Belgium; Nottingham and London, England; Brooklyn, Chicago, and Madison, WI in the US. The Internet helps artists and curators access creative dialogue by enabling geographically decentralized artistic movements. In turn, artists’ shared aesthetic pursuits surface, despite physical distance.
This exhibition presents proof of parallel work and artworks that emphasize the relevance of abstraction, and its inherent accessibility. By utilizing the objective qualities of color, form, movement, pattern, and repetition, the artwork featured in Echo Spectrum transcends age, culture, gender, place, and other isolating factors. The exhibited artworks deliver an intimate view into the ideas, intention, and labor of these artists, who wish to share of themselves and their work with others, by offering us a way, through their work, to connect across borders and time.

Time Further Out
Inspired by the late Dave Brubeck 1961 album, “Time further Out”, Smith’s recent paintings explore notions of time in ways that alter shape and form. Smith delves into the uncertainty of modular forms as the basis of his paintings’ construction. He joins shapes together with lyrical motives that allude to the interpersonal and gestural narratives at the helm of his creative practice. “Time Further Out” investigates the prospects of sequencing content over more than one canvas, where themes are developed in stages. In doing so, time synchronizes with space both literally and perceptually. The challenge presented with Smith’s “Time Further Out” is one’s ability to succumb to a fractured sense of pictorial space in order to process the subject within the personal confines of the mind.
Smith is informed by minimalist ideologies, particularly, Post Painterly Abstraction and New Geometric Conceptualism. Dimensional expansion of perceived two-dimensional space is at the core of Smith’s project. He questions principles of multi-dimensional geometries, creating unconventional viewing experiences, in which alternative pictorial spaces operate allegorically. In lieu of early 20th century fourth dimensional antidotes, “Time Further Out” reconsiders multiple dimensionalities contrary to cubism; where triangle facets represent an array of planes and angles seen from different points of view dismantling the matrix of realism. Leslie Smith III restructures the matrix of abstraction on a scale that encompasses painting as both object and image.

Vivir en la Tierra Plana
"Living in The Flat land"
January 24 - March 13, 2015
Opening February 28
Ponce + Robles Gallery
Calle Alameda, 5
28014 Madrid, Spain
Smith's new paintings explore the confines of space, relinquishing conventional concepts of flatness and depth. In response to his broader thematic ideas, Smith's shaped canvases duplicate and tessellate from one painting to the next. They infer narrative by representing the nuances found in everyday human experiences - they push, pull and contort space for the purpose of challenging the way pictorial space is experienced. Vivir en la tierra plana (Living In The Flat Land) presents a selection of abstractions questioning the viewer's role. Contrary to the minimalist and post painterly vernacular appropriated by Smith, these paintings investigate the relative preferences of whether to look at or to glimpse into his painted spaces. His new paintings provide experiences that are fluid in their observation, while simultaneously evoking pictorial space and physical presence. Smith finds depth within the flat land.

Working in monochrome, featured artists push limits conceptually under restriction of a single color. With roots back to the Suprematist Composition in Moscow in the early twentieth century, monochromatic works are an important component of the avant-garde. The practice was explored by artists of the mid twentieth century such as color field painters Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, as well as minimalists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Brice Marden.
